What We Review in Your Microsoft 365 Tenant

Altius IT's Microsoft 365 security audit goes beyond basic checks. Our CISA-certified auditors conduct a comprehensive Microsoft 365 security assessment of your entire tenant to identify hidden misconfigurations, security gaps, and compliance blind spots that could expose your organization to cyber threats.

Most businesses rely on Microsoft 365 for email, collaboration, document storage, and communication, but default Microsoft 365 settings are not designed for maximum security. Misconfigurations in identity, sharing, and email policies leave organizations vulnerable to phishing attacks, account takeovers, business email compromise, and data breaches. Because Microsoft 365 holds your email, your files, and your identity directory, its tenant settings are the cloud security controls most organizations depend on most. Our assessment identifies exactly what to change so your Microsoft 365 environment can be securely configured, properly monitored, and aligned with your compliance requirements.

Why a Microsoft 365 Security Assessment Is Critical

Seven Areas of Your Tenant, Reviewed in Detail

Default Microsoft 365 settings are built for convenience, not security. We review each area against the CIS Microsoft 365 Foundations Benchmark and Microsoft’s own security guidance.

  • Conditional access policies
  • Privileged Identity Management (PIM)
  • User and role assessment

  • Conditional access policiesPolicy completeness, risk-based access rules, device compliance requirements, location-based restrictions, and session controls.
  • Privileged Identity Management (PIM)Standing admin access review, just-in-time privilege elevation configuration, role activation requirements, and access reviews.
  • User and role assessmentExcessive global admin assignments, stale and inactive accounts, guest user permissions, and least-privilege alignment.
  • Authentication methodsLegacy authentication protocols, password policies, self-service password reset configuration, and sign-in risk policies.

Our Audit Process

A well-defined audit process is the foundation of any effective Microsoft 365 security assessment. Our structured approach ensures that your tenant configuration, policies, and security controls are thoroughly evaluated.

01

Planning & Preparation

The audit team works with key stakeholders to define scope, clarify objectives, and identify critical workloads and users to be reviewed. We establish a baseline understanding of your current Microsoft 365 deployment, licensing tier, and existing security configuration before assessment begins.

02

Tenant Assessment

Our auditors conduct a comprehensive review of your Microsoft 365 tenant using a combination of manual configuration analysis and automated tooling. Every workload is examined: Entra ID, Exchange Online, SharePoint, OneDrive, Teams, Defender for Office 365, Intune, and the compliance center.

03

Reporting & Remediation

We deliver a detailed findings report with severity ratings, configuration evidence, and step-by-step remediation guidance. Your Microsoft Secure Score is benchmarked and mapped against the CIS Microsoft 365 Foundations Benchmark. Three months of post-audit support is included.

Frequently Asked Questions

We need read access to review configurations, typically through a dedicated account with global reader and security reader roles. We do not change settings in your tenant; findings and remediation steps are delivered to your team to apply.

Secure Score is a useful starting point, but it measures Microsoft’s own recommendations and treats them equally. We review your tenant against the CIS Microsoft 365 Foundations Benchmark, look at how settings interact with how your organization actually works, and prioritize findings by risk.

All business and enterprise plans. Some controls, such as Privileged Identity Management or Defender for Office 365 Plan 2, depend on your license, so we note where a gap is a configuration issue and where it would require a license change.

No. The review is read-only and does not change settings, so users are not affected while it takes place.
